  • Graduate students pursuing a PhD at UBC on a full-time basis.

4. Australia and New Zealand

PhD students must nominate by their respective universities. Nomination instructions are sent to eligible universities, and applications must submit during the application window by an official representative of the university. For Australia and New Zealand

The university will be asked to submit the following materials in a single PDF file for each student nomination:

  1. Student curriculum vitae with links to websites and publications (if available).
  2. A brief (1-page) CV of the student’s primary advisor is required.
  3. Transcripts of current and prior academic records are required.
  4. 2-3 letters of recommendation from people who know the nominee’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor).
  5. References are included in the research / dissertation proposal (maximum 8 pages).

For East Asia, Europe, United States & Canada

The university will be asked to submit the following materials in a single PDF file for each student nomination:

  • The Department Chair signs a cover sheet confirming that the student meets the eligibility requirements. (For more information, see the FAQ “What are the eligibility requirements for students?”).
  • Student curriculum vitae with links to websites and publications (if available).
  • Brief (1-page) The primary advisor of the student’s curriculum vitae.
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation from people who know the nominee’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor).
  • References are included in the research / dissertation proposal (maximum 8 pages).
  • Student essay response (maximum of 350 words) to: Describe the desired impact of your research on the field and society, as well as why it is important to you. Include any personal, educational, or professional experiences that influenced your research interests.
