Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships 2022 Belgium | Fully Funded

Every academic year, as part of its contribution to global development, KU Leuven selects exceptional scholars from institutions in the Global South as scholarship candidates to obtain their PhD from Belgium’s largest university. The Interfaculty Council for Global Development at KU Leuven oversees the Global Minds Programme. Hence, Applications are invited for fully funded Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Belgium for the session 2022-2023.

The goal is to provide scholars with the opportunity to conduct four years of PhD research in a’sandwich’ system, which means that a maximum of 50% of the research funded and conducted at KU Leuven, and at least 50% is conducted and funded by the scholar’s home institution, with the support of a local co-promoter. As a result, as partners, both KU Leuven and the home institution co-fund the research. KU Leuven, on the other hand, provides a supervision allowance to both the local co-promotor at the home institution and the promotor at KU Leuven.

Candidates must assign by their home institution and receive adequate financial support from that institution in order to conduct effective research. This ensures that the candidate deeply embed in his or her home country and will be able to contribute to local capacity building after receiving the PhD. The scholarships awarded to outstanding proposals that address a development-related research topic, preferably one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals.
