HZB Summer Student Program 2025 in Germany | Paid Internship Program
Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin provides an eight-week HZB Summer Student Program for undergraduate overseas students in Germany. This program will allow 20 students to conduct research on their chosen project under the supervision of HZB scientists working in the fields of photon science, photovoltaics, chemical energy, solar energy, accelerators, electrochemical energy storage, quantum and functional materials.
In addition, students in this summer internship program will collaborate with research professionals in contemporary facilities on HZB sites in Berlin, where diverse energy conversion studies are undertaken. Why HZB Summer Student Program?
This International Summer Program will be a fantastic chance for anyone who wish to contribute to climate change. During this eight-week paid international summer student program (ISSP), students will have the opportunity to tour the research centre BESSY II accelerator and view the equipment and machines utilised for electron storage and acceleration. Additionally, students will attend courses on science communication and entrepreneurship, with a closing event featuring a scientific poster presentation.
Additionally, participants will meet and connect with individuals from various cultural backgrounds, providing an excellent chance for socialising throughout their time in Germany. Also, as students work in laboratories on their research projects, they will gain hands-on experience with scientific equipment that they will need in the future as they advance in their professions.
Coverage of HZB Summer Student Program
- External participants will get a monthly stipend of €1,900 (gross), while students from Berlin and Potsdam universities will receive €1,000 (gross) during the contract time.
- Also, up to 75% of travel expenses will pay, with a maximum of €200 for EU countries and €800 for non-EU countries, to assist you get from Berlin to your home.
- Visit two research centres situated at HBZ institutions.
- Tours of additional scientific centres in Berlin.
- Sessions focused on entrepreneurship and scientific culture.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants applying must:
- Be an undergraduate student studying Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Engineering, Life Sciences, or Environmental Sciences, as well as other relevant areas.
- Complete at least four semesters of university in the appropriate field. Enroll at your present university while pursuing the HZB program.
- Be able to converse in English.
- Include a letter of recommendation with their application.

- Enrolment certificate from the university where you are presently studying.
- Current academic transcript.
- Reference letter.
- Make a photocopy of your passport or national identity card.
- ISSP Declaration of Certificate of Enrolment.
