Eligibility Criteria for the United Nations Internships

Applicants must meet the following criteria for the UN internships:

1. Required Languages

The organization’s working languages are English and French. For this role, proficiency in English is necessary; knowledge in another UN official language is advantageous.

5. Planning and Organising

Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed-upon strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as needed; allocates an appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; anticipates risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as needed; and manages time efficiently.

6. Technological Awareness

Keeps up to date on current technology; understands its application and limitations in the workplace; actively attempts to apply technology to relevant activities; and has a desire to learn new technology.

7. Education

To be eligible for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following requirements must be met:

  • Applicants must fulfil one of the following conditions before submitting their application.
  • Enrol in a graduate school program (second university degree, equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the last academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in journalism, communications, human development, psychology, sociology, disability inclusion, international relations, human resources, or a similar discipline.
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as indicated in a and b above), and, if selected, must begin the internship within one year after graduation.
  • If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in journalism, communications, human development, psychology, sociology, disability inclusion, international relations, human resources, or related field.
  • Be computer literate in standard word processing and software applications like Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as adept in common office automation equipment (scanner, printer, etc.).
  • Have shown a strong interest in the activities of the United Nations and a personal dedication to the values of the United Nations Charter.
  • Have proven the capacity to successfully communicate with people from various cultural origins and ideas, including a desire to strive to understand and tolerate alternative points of view.
